Auburn University gymnast and senior aerospace engineering major, Samantha Cerio, broke both legs while performing her floor routine at the NCAA regional event in Louisiana on Friday.
An extremely hard to watch video, it shows both of Cerio’s legs buckling as she landed back on the mat after a tumbling pass. Air casts were placed on both legs by paramedics before she was carried out on a stretcher. The 5500 fans in attendance gave her a standing ovation.
Auburn’s head coach Jeff Graba said “it was pretty hard to watch in article with Times-Picayune newspaper.
Warning: some viewers may find this disturbing.
Sunday after the meet, Cerios confirmed the end to her gymnastics career in an Instagram post:
“After 18 years I am hanging up my grips and leaving the chalk behind,” she wrote. “I couldn’t be prouder of the person that gymnastics has made me to become. It’s taught me hard work, humility, integrity, and dedication, just to name a few. It’s given me challenges and road blocks that I would have never imagined that has tested who I am as a person. It may not have ended the way I had planned, but nothing ever goes as planned…”
“Thank you Auburn family for giving me a home and a chance to continue doing the sport that will always be my first love. I am honored to have had the privilege to represent the navy and orange AU for the past 4 years with my team by my side. Thank you for letting me share my passion with you. Thank you for letting me be a part of something bigger than myself.”Samanthana Cerio
Samantha Cerio earned All-SEC awards in 2017 and 2018. She has already accepted a job upon her graduation in May to work for Boeing in Seattle. She added an update to her health on Sunday night and thanking her supporters.
